Boating Education Requirements
Any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1989 must complete an approved boater safety education course before operating a motorboat or sailboat on public waters in Kansas. The law applies equally to residents and non-residents.

No person 12 through 15 years of age shall operate a personal watercraft unless a person 17 years of age or older is aboard the personal watercraft, or unless they have successfully completed a department approved safe boating course.

No person shall permit another person under 16 years of age to operate the personal watercraft unless that person has met the education requirements.

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks offers Boating Safety Courses in a variety of methods: Home Study Text Book - contact hatcaptain@wp.state.ks.us; Home Study Internet - log onto www.boatsafe.com/Kansas; or Classroom Instruction - Volunteer instructors and Department staff organize classes in their communities. Class locations can be found on the Department web site. A list of classes is mailed to marinas, park offices, newspapers and vendors. For more information you may also contact us at: hatcaptain@wp.state.ks.us, feedback@wp.state.ks.us or at 785-296-2281.

Boat Registration
All boats powered by gasoline, diesel, electricity, or sail must be registered and numbered. Sailboats and personal watercraft are considered boats.

Nonresidents using motorboats and sailing boats that are properly registered in another state may use their boats for up to 60 consecutive days without registering their boats in Kansas. Boat in-state and out-of-state boats must have their registration papers on board the vessel at all times. Boats that are required to be registered must be properly registered before they are operated.

An application form can be obtained at the nearest marine dealer, county clerk's office, or from Department offices. Fill out the application completely and mail it along with the required fee.
